A Glossary of Terms

Wow!  It has been a full week!  It has been a strange week work wise so I have been a little distracted.  I have been reading all the blogs, just haven't been able to comment. However, back to it!

I have confusion and I hoping that someone has posted a Glossary of Terms to clear up my questions.  In all my reading of various running books, blogs, articles etc..I see different terms and titles for different types of runs.  Just when I think I have it down pat, I read another article and the terminology is different and I am at a loss AGAIN.

For example, I know was a LSD and I totally understand its purpose and structure.  However, the Continuos Run vrs a Steady Run vrs a Tempo Run vs the ordinary - just run - this is where I get  confused.  Throw in more advanced titles like "Lactate Threshold" and "Pace Intervals" and I am spent.  You'd think an expensive education would have served be better???

Therefore, if anyone has posted any such glossary or can confirm for me what things are the same feel free to tell me where to find it.  To further fuel the fire, I am constantly converting between KM's and Miles depending on what article or information I am reading which has turned me into scholastic mush. :)

On a side note, Marci and I are working on something great that we hope to announce soon!  We are very excited about it so we can't wait.

Not sure about continuous or steady run...I pretty sure they mean tempo. Here is a great link to glossary of running terms:

I have been running for years and I still get confused... I just do what feels good.

If you find a good answer, post it so I'm sure not to miss it. I'm constantly looking up terms on runners world as I come across them.

my brain is mush with all the new vocab etc, and now that i've thrown heart rate training into the mix, it's even more confusing! Looking forward to the announcement!

I think there are a variety of ways to interpret the same terms depending on the resource you read, thus the confusion. I

I'm just as lost as you are with the various types of runs!

Can't wait to hear what you and Marci have up your sleeves!

I have the same problem. I recently realized that I had calculated all of my tempo paces for the FIRST program wrong because I was translating the initials wrong. Oops. And don't even get me started on the whole km to miles thing . . . makes my head spin.

you know I found a great glossary online once but I can't remember where and of course I didn't bookmark it. Read your comment that you come up with running commercials too! I am also glad I'm not the only one (and I'm sure there are others like us!) Great blog!

Oh hun, I am still learning and half the time, when I do know what some of those things are, I don't always do them!

Since I can barely remember to run slow when I need to go a long distance, I obviously haven't figured out what any of them mean...

I'll be checking back to see if you find any answers... I'm confused on all these terms, too. My personal vocab classifies all runs as:
1) long
2) longer
3) hilly
4) flat
5) yucky
6) awesome

I'm curious to see what you find out!

I am so with you. I am new to running and all of these terms (Fartlek???) really confuse me. Glossary would be nice.

I think different training plans/articles use different terms, so your confusion is normal! There is one good explanation at http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/training4.htm but I expect it isn't comprehensive and other coaches may interpret the terms differently.

the terms definitely throw a wrench or two in! i don't know of any helpful 'dictionaries' but i just try to keep my runs pretty simple...
tempo = hard
regular = whatever pace feels comfortable for the day
long = long, and slower than regular
speed = reps/intervals on the track
if i had to try to remember all the different terms and what pace i needed for each of them i'd probably end up doing all my runs "regular" :)

I love Rookie on the Run's list!

Hey, I don't have the best suggestions for breakfast options because I'm addicted to oatmeal and that's all I eat. Once a week I change it up though and have 2 whole wheat ego waffles.

what about making smoothies? Do you like them?

Well, and then you go and think you have the definition all down and realize someone else's definition is entirely different!

I'm with Linsey--my runs are easy, intervals, tempo (sustained faster speed after warmup), or long.

It's working so far. But kudos to you for wanting to expand your vocabulary!

I hear you about the terminology.
I do Long runs, interval training (so like 2 x 400 at 10k pace, etc), tempo (3-6 miles at race pace). And easy runs.
