Attack of the Blob

I am in a rut. Marathon Mama refered to herself as Ectoplasm which I thought was hilarious so I am totally stealing it and it will now be a reflection of my mood over the past few days.

Last week we had great weather and now back to cold temps and snow - yuck. I keep begging hubby to get promoted to California or the Carolinas where he goes all the time but so far I am not getting anywhere. Run Girl has decided that sleep is not necessary even after nearly four years of life so I have had one too many pre-school sized conversations at 2:00 in the morning. Futhermore, I have had some work stress and things are not going as I hoped. I don't exactly work in a recession proof industry so I am hitting wall after wall and sometimes, it is better to just fall down.

I was very inspired by my new training plan last week and yet I have not run in four days. Call it time management, call it laziness, call it a sudden addiction to my couch after the kidlets are gone to bed - whatever it is, I am losing myself quickly and turning into that green blob. Perhaps me and Marathon Mama should go out for a gigantic bowl of ice cream to really finish us off. :)

I need some inspiration. I may be opening up the flood gates here but I want to know of a book you have read or a great article or something that really gets your blood pumping. It would be fantastic if it could be about a 30 something working mom of little kids, with a travelling husband, 20 extra pounds to lose and the desire to be a superior runner and elite soccer/tennis player and super mom but alas, this may be asking too much. I accept all entries and welcome thoughts.

It would also be wonderful if something free could just show up at my door like I read about on several blogs. What fairy godmother do I talk to about that? (I am smiling as much my ectoplasm will allow for) :)

This sounds like cause for an ectoplasm-banishment virtual race. That might be some motivation, right?

Awards go to those with the highest temperature or most cough breaks during the run.

Feel better!

First, the books: I Don't Know How She Does It (very funny novel about 30-something working mom trying to balance everything) and Strides (most invigorating running book I've read).
Second, the free stuff: I have a pair of shoes you might want to try... :)
Third, that ice cream idea sounds good to me.

I didn't get any offers until I posted my email address and made it easy to find on my blog. Best thing I've done yet!

i could use some free stuff too, and nicer weather. After we got spoiled last week, these last two days have seemed miserable. hope it all works out for ya soon :)

Hmm, so I'm not sure about a book meeting that synopsis exactly, but if you are looking a read that you can't put down I really recommend Prisoner of Tehran by Marina Nemat.

Ectoplasm...good one! Good luck finding your mojo!!

Have you seen Spirit of the marathon? Love it

also, back when I was training for my first marathon, I went to the library and checked out tons of books about marathons. I found one (names escapes me) of several first time marathons stories, told by that runner. I loved it. Maybe it is not what you need since you are not a first time marathoner but maybe the library is a good idea.

I went to the library and checked out about seven books on marathons and running last Thursday and have read 4 of them! I liked Dean Karnaze's Ultramarathon Man. He talks alot about running with his heart. And after reading about his 100+ mile races in very harsh environments, going out for my five-miler doesn't seem so bad. I also read a good one on the history of running/marathoning by Katherine Switzer called 26.2 stories.

Watching Spirit of the Marathon or the Nova Marathon Challenge (online) are both pretty motivating.

I got nothin for ya on motivation other than looking at one self naked in the mirror...usually gets me out the door;)

Yeah, Steve in a Speedo asked me for a free car so he could blog about it...see I'm not in a recession proof industry either (totally blows).

ok for a book that will get you running, i know this sounds CRAZY but the memoir First They Killed My Father, is amazing read about khmer rouge in cambodia and a girls survival, it inspired me b/c she went through something none of us can fathom. it wasn't way back in time, it was in our lifetime.

I just posted on books today and I swear to you they are part of what has gotten me going on this training plan. The other thing for me is routine...if I always walk or run at the same time then I get used to it and really want to do it.

I pray for us all that this damn winter stuff is almost over! I'm not sure I can handle many more freezing runs

Rut happens. I tried to get out of mine by watching "Spirit of the Marathon." I think that made it worse. Really, the best motivation for me has been reading the blogs.

Good luck!

OK, let's see:
- working mom
- lack of sleep
- traveling hubby
- trying to get rid of those stubborn pounds
- work stress
- soccer/tennis
- kids, kids, kids, kids
... you have a lot on your plate right now! How can you NOT be tired and feeling like relaxing when the kids finally go to bed?

It sounds like you got some good suggestions for things to read for motivation. I have none, myself. As a newbie to running, though, my only advice is to have fun with your training!

I know you'll get back motivation back!

We've had the return of the cold weather this week too and it does just suck the life right out of you. Hope the motivation returns soon!

I hope you feel better soon. March is coming, and I hope we get some better weather. A new shirt or some new music always helps me to get moving. Good Luck!

I have also been wondeering why my Fairy Free-Swag-Mother will show up. :)

Sorry to hear that you're feeling a little down and out... it's probably a case of the February blahs. With that and all the stress going on, no wonder you aren't flooding with motivation. Just remember why you are doing this and try to make the time (and finds the energy) for yourself.

I can have a FREE shirt made for you if you'd like! Pick a color, white or gray; tell me your shirt size; and lastly what you want on the shirt. The school I work at makes shirts, mugs, mousepads, magnets with your choice of words or a picture. Hope this helps!!
